About the project

About the Scotland Charrette

A form of intensive community engagement, the Charrette aimed to capture the vision, values and ideas of the community.  Over a number of consecutive days, a series of workshops were held where the parties involved explored design options laying the foundations for the Lochgelly Strategic Land Allocation Masterplan.

The Charrette series was led by internationally renowned design team providing access to a wide range of skills, experience and expertise.  Andres Duany, a principal of DPZ (based in Miami) is widely regarded as a visionary in community planning and urban design and DPZ have designed over 300 new and existing communities in the United States and overseas.

The SSCI Charrette Series concluded on March 25, 2010, with a presentation in Edinburgh. Co-ordinated by Fife Council, the Lochgelly Charrette primarily focused on generating masterplans for the Lochgelly Strategic Land Allocation. This proposes the development of 1750 houses on sites around the town periphery. The Charrette team also offered design strategies for the revitalisation of Lochgelly town centre, aiming to propose a ‘whole-town solution’ offering a sustainable approach to the town’s expansion and future development (see Proposals)

Vision for change

The long-term vision for Lochgelly is that it will develop as a compact, well connected and adaptable urban settlement with a vibrant and viable town centre.  It will be a centre of environmental sustainability with well-designed and comfortable spaces that meets the needs of existing and emerging communities.

Short-term initiatives

To maintain momentum, a group has been set up to take forward a number of short-term projects within the next twelve months.  The group has representatives from Fife Council as well as external partners Ore Valley Housing Association and its subsidiary Fife HARCA and ATTFife.  See the results of the recent perception study under ‘News and Views’.
